چکیده

We discuss the microscopic origin of a previously poorly understood phenomenon, the alignment of a nematic liquid crystal (LC), consisting of rod-like molecular units, when placed on a rubbed polymer surface. After giving a brief review of the phenomenon and its technological utilization in flat panel displays we discuss the use of surface sensitive, polarization dependent near edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy for the study of rubbed polymer surfaces. These measurements are shown to provide a microscopic picture for the origin of the alignment process. It is shown that the LC orientation direction is set by an asymmetry in the molecular bonds, i.e. of the charge, at the rubbed polymer surface. The experimental results are explained by a general theory, based on tensor order parameters, which states that the minimum energy state of the interaction between the LC and oriented polymer surface corresponds to maximum directional overlap of the respective anisotropic charge distributions. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Fuzzy ARIMA model for forecasting the foreign exchange market

Considering the time-series ARIMA(p,d, q) model and fuzzy regression model, this paper develops a fuzzy ARIMA (FARIMA) model and applies it to forecasting the exchange rate of NT dollars to US dollars. This model includes interval models with interval parameters and the possibility distribution of future values is provided by FARIMA. This model makes it possible for decision makers to forecast ...

Real and integer domination in graphs

For an arbitrary subset P of the reals, we define a function f :V → P to be a Pdominating function of graph G = (V,E) if the sum of the function values over any closed neighbourhood is at least 1. That is, for every v ∈ V , f(N(v) ∪ {v}) ≥ 1. The P-domination number of a graph is defined to be the infimum of f(V ) taken over all P-dominating functions f . When P = {0, 1} one obtains the standar...

Nonlinearities of near-threshold contrast transduction

The existence of analytic threshold nonlinearities was probed with 2AFC incremental threshold functions for both local and extended test patterns on stationary matched pedestals of the same and opposite sign. In contrast to the facilitation effect with same-sign pedestals, sensitivity with opposite-sign pedestals first deteriorated up to the mask detection level, abruptly improved and then dete...

Sensitivity to configural changes in face processing has been cited as evidence for face-exclusive mechanisms. Alternatively, general mechanisms could be fine-tuned by experience with homogeneous stimuli. We tested sensitivity to configural transformations for novices and experts with nonface stimuli (“Greebles”). Parts of transformed Greebles were identified via forced-choice recognition. Rega...
